🦋 LACE WINGS SERIES: Butterflies Woven from Memory

This series continues and expands my «Tropical Butterflies» series. But here, the butterflies gain one more important element: hand-crocheted lace collage on their wings. They almost look as if they have been knitted rather than painted.

For me, adding lace carries a very personal meaning.

Lace feels like the memory of generations and the passing down of traditions. I think many of us remember our grandmother’s house with its delicate lace doilies carefully placed on tables and dressers. There was something incredibly warm and comforting about that atmosphere.

Today, those details have mostly disappeared from modern interiors and are often seen as old-fashioned. But I found myself wondering:

What if I could bring that feeling back in a contemporary way?

What if butterflies could have lace wings that remind us of our childhood homes, or of the homes of our grandmothers and great-grandmothers?

That is exactly what the «Lace Wings» series is about. To me, it feels touching, cozy, gentle, and at the same time both traditional and contemporary.

The process of creating these artworks is just as fascinating as the idea behind them.

I begin by crocheting lace patterns by hand using cotton thread. Then I stretch the lace onto a rigid surface and secure it with small nails. Once it is in place, I paint over it with acrylic, which fixes its shape permanently. After the paint has completely dried, I remove the nails and carefully cut out the elements I need for the collage.

The lace becomes stable and durable, without unraveling or losing its form, making it perfect for artistic use.

The result is a collection of butterflies with beautifully textured lace wings, each one carrying a little piece of memory, craftsmanship, and imagination.
